District 16 Supervision Route
Probation and Parole District 16 serves Giles, Galax, Bland, Carroll, Grayson, and Wythe from Wytheville. It supervises people in the community under VADOC authority. It does not confine prisoners or process jail gate releases. A person may reach District 16 after leaving a VADOC institution on parole, after a court orders probation, or through another state post-release supervision term.
Institutional release and supervision discharge answer different questions. A person can live in Giles County while remaining subject to conditions and officer reporting. Appearance as a supervisee confirms active VADOC authority, not the end of the sentence, the absence of another case, or the exact day and time the prison door opened. Final discharge requires the applicable Board, court, and VADOC record.

Virginia law permits withholding of supervision files that contain protected addresses, risk assessments, treatment information, and case-plan detail. Public correctional status can still be distinguished from a demand for the full file. When a court order is the needed record, contact the Giles clerk rather than District 16.
District 16 Release Meaning
Parole is conditional release from prison for an eligible sentence after a Virginia Parole Board decision. Probation is imposed by a court and may replace or follow incarceration. Modern post-release supervision can apply even where ordinary discretionary parole does not. All can place a person under VADOC community authority, but their source documents and end dates differ.

A supervisee hit is strong affirmative evidence. A no-result is weaker because data can be stale, the person may have fully discharged, or the case may belong to local community corrections rather than VADOC. VADOC says its locator updates daily but may contain inaccurate or outdated information.
Giles Local Supervision Difference
New River Valley Community Corrections and Pretrial Services serves the 27th Judicial District, including Giles. It handles local pretrial supervision and local probation functions. It is not VADOC District 16, the Virginia Parole Board, or a public name-search service. A person released on bond from NRVRJ may report there without ever becoming a VADOC parolee.
Use the Giles court order to identify which system applies. A bond order may name pretrial conditions. A sentencing order can impose local or state probation. A parole record comes from the Board and VADOC. Calling the wrong office can expose private information requests and still fail to answer the status question, so match the legal source before contacting staff.

A suspected violation can lead to arrest, a hearing, changed conditions, revocation, or another procedural result. It does not erase the prior institutional release. Emergency concerns belong with 911; routine record questions should go through official agency channels.
District 16 Final Discharge
Ending supervision requires more than completing an expected date on a calendar. The applicable court or Board authority and VADOC records establish discharge. A person may finish prison custody, remain supervised, face a violation, receive changed conditions, and later obtain final discharge. Each is a separate event.
Ask for the specific document that answers the question. The Order of Release establishes facility departure. Conditions identify continued duties. The Giles sentencing order establishes probation authority. A final discharge record establishes the end of that authority. This record-by-record approach prevents the common error of calling a community supervisee fully discharged.

District 16 Supervision Records

These programs can help with navigation, care connections, and transport barriers, but they do not provide a named-person supervision lookup.
The distinction protects both accuracy and privacy. A support provider cannot certify parole, probation, a warrant, or final discharge. Verify those facts through VADOC, District 16, the Board, and the Giles court. Use support organizations only for their published service role after the legal status is known.
Remaining NRVRJ account funds are another separate matter. The regional jail says a released person may have the balance mailed or collect it in person. District 16 does not control jail funds or property. Call NRVRJ before travel because no release-day property procedure is published.
District 16 should also be distinguished from the Virginia Parole Board. The Board decides eligible parole matters; District 16 carries out community supervision. A Board docket or decision does not replace the later VADOC status and release record. Match each document to its role before stating that Giles custody ended or supervision began.
Monthly Parole Board reports can show a decision date, grant or denial, reasons, conditions, sentence data, and member votes. They do not prove the later physical release. VADOC must carry out the decision, prepare documents, check holds, and record the institutional departure. District 16 becomes relevant when community supervision is assigned.
For probation, the court order is primary. A suspended term plus probation can follow an NRVRJ release without any parole decision. Later revocation proceedings can return the person to custody. Match the order, locator status, and office assignment before stating whether a Giles person is currently supervised, discharged, or confined.
